Are we here
VR installation, hybrid performance, video, iPads
Kunstverein Gütersloh, 2024

The installation was created in collaboration with Stephanie Sczepanek. One artist inside the pavilion existed as a live performer and simultaneously as an avatar in virtual reality, where visitors could seek him out and join him via iPads. On the outside of the pavilion, the other artist wrote down her memories of the past 24 hours in a stream of consciousness; deleting, overwriting, and rephrasing as she went, much like the neural process of memory storage in the brain.

The virtual world – lonely, dark, and dystopian, a memory of a possible future – stood in sharp
contrast to the everyday world of the German pedestrian zone where the work was exhibited. The performative installation served as a rendezvous point between the real and virtual spheres, in which visitors and performers interacted in both worlds simultaneously.
